Seam vs Better Reports

Last reviewed 15 August 2026

Short answer

Better Reports is a full reporting platform: over a hundred built-in reports, a custom report builder, scheduled exports, and pricing from $19.90 to $299.90 a month keyed to your Shopify plan. Seam is a daily insight email with no report builder at all. The choice is whether your problem is building reports or reading them.

The difference that actually decides it

Better Reports answers questions. Seam raises them.

With Better Reports you specify what you want: these fields, this grouping, this filter, delivered every Monday as a spreadsheet. It will build almost anything you can describe, and if you cannot describe it, the vendor will build it for you as part of the subscription.

That model has one requirement: you have to know what to ask for. A scheduled report is a question you asked once and now receive forever, which is excellent for questions you already know matter and useless for the thing that went wrong on a Tuesday you were not thinking about.

Seam has no report builder and never will. It reads the store, decides what was most notable, and writes a paragraph. You cannot ask it for a pivot table by SKU by region.

Where Better Reports is genuinely stronger

On its own ground this is not close, and pretending otherwise would be silly.

Breadth. More than a hundred built-in reports covering finance, inventory, customers, POS, multi-currency and multi-store, plus a custom builder with its own expression language for reusable metrics. Seam has none of this. There is no version of Seam that produces a COGS report.

The custom report service. Every tier, including the $19.90 one, includes the vendor building custom reports for you. That is a service bundled at the entry price rather than an enterprise upsell, and recent five-star reviews repeatedly single out support doing exactly that.

Track record. Listed since February 2017 with 1,141 reviews at a sustained 5.0 average, and carrying Shopify own Built for Shopify badge. Seam has been on the App Store for a fraction of that time and has nothing like the evidence base.

Export destinations. PDF, Excel, CSV and Google Sheets, with documented row limits of 1,000,000 on a manual run, 100,000 on a schedule running daily or less, and 10,000 on more frequent schedules. Seam exports nothing.

The pricing model is unusual and worth understanding

Better Reports charges by your Shopify plan rather than by features: $19.90 on Basic, $39.90 on Grow, $149.90 on Advanced and $299.90 on Plus, billed every 30 days.

Every one of those tiers ships an identical feature list. You are not buying more product at $299.90 than at $19.90, you are paying more because your store is larger. Whether that feels fair depends entirely on which end of it you are.

There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial on each tier. Seam has a free plan that is not time-limited and a $5 Pro tier, which is a different order of magnitude and also a much smaller product.

What merchants raise in critical reviews

Almost nothing, and the sample is too small to draw a conclusion from.

Across the app entire history there are four reviews at one or two stars, against 1,141 total. Two of those four fall within the last twelve months. That is not a pattern and we are not going to present it as one.

For completeness, the two recent ones: a two-star review from 14 October 2025 from a merchant of about a month calling the interface too complicated and noting the absence of phone support, and a one-star review from 19 November 2025 from a merchant of four days asking for a getting-started tutorial. Both are onboarding complaints from very short-tenure users. Neither alleges inaccuracy.

If there is a signal in four negative reviews out of 1,141, it is that the product is powerful enough to be intimidating on day one.

What we could not verify

Uninstall behaviour and data retention. Nothing on the Shopify listing, the vendor website, the documentation site or the linked privacy policy states what happens to your data when you uninstall, or how long it is kept. All Shopify apps must implement the mandatory compliance webhooks, but that is a platform requirement rather than a vendor commitment, and we are not going to present it as one.

Whether granular permissions exist. The vendor homepage markets granular permissions as a team-management feature, while the Shopify connector documentation states that permissions limiting access at the report or table level are not supported. Both are vendor-owned pages. We could not resolve which applies to the Shopify connector, so we are reporting the contradiction rather than picking a side.

Choose Better Reports if, choose Seam if

Choose Better Reports if you need actual reports: specific fields, specific groupings, exported on a schedule, or reconciled against your accounts. If someone in your business says the words "can we get a report that shows", this is the answer and Seam is not.

Choose Seam if the problem is not that you lack reports but that nobody reads them. A daily paragraph is a much smaller product and it survives busy weeks in a way a scheduled spreadsheet does not.

Running both is entirely reasonable and the costs are not comparable enough to make it a real decision: Better Reports for the questions you know you have, a daily note for the ones you do not.

Common questions

How much does Better Reports cost?
From $19.90 to $299.90 per month as of 15 August 2026, priced by your underlying Shopify plan rather than by features. All four tiers list identical features, and there is a 14-day free trial rather than a free plan.
Does Better Reports slow down my store?
It should not. The vendor FAQ states it works entirely off API data and does not touch the front end or the theme at all, and that it operates read-only. It carries Shopify Built for Shopify badge.
Can Better Reports email me reports automatically?
Yes, on every tier including the cheapest, delivered by email or into Google Sheets on daily, weekly or monthly schedules. Row limits apply: 100,000 rows for schedules running daily or less, 10,000 for more frequent ones.
Is Seam a replacement for Better Reports?
No. Seam has no report builder, no exports and no custom fields. It writes one paragraph a day about what changed. If you need to specify and receive particular reports, that is a different product category.
